DEVELOPMENT OF ONCOLOGY WING CIVIL HOSPITAL, SHILLONG

The purchase of Cobalt-60 Machine:   -  Central & State contribution

 Objectives:

The main objective of setting up of Cobalt-60 Machine in Civil Hospital Shillong is  

  • To treat the Cancer patients.

  • To utilize the expert personnel of the state in the field of radiation therapy.

  • To make people aware on the availability of treatment facility.

  • It has fulfilled the direction of the Ministry of Health, Govt. of India that every state government should have cancer treatment facilities.

COMPONENTS OF THE GRANT-IN-AID AS PROJECTED BY THE STATE CANCER SOCIETY OF MEGHALAYA TO THE GOVERNMENT.

The Grant-in-aid is for the purchase of one unit of Tele cobalt machine. The State Cancer Society of Meghalaya projected the following components which consist of:-

  • Decommission of the old Gammarex machine.

  • Renovation of the old Gamarex Room to install a new Cobalt Machine  according to BARC direction for the purpose of Radiation Safety.  

  • Purchase of Cobalt-60 and accessories and Monitoring Equipments.

  • Purchase of 3D Treatment Planning System (TPS).

  • Purchase of Mould Room Paraphernalia’s.

  • Disposal of the decayed Cobalt Source.

  • Inspection and Commission of the Cobalt Machine by experience Medical Physicists from established Cancer Institute.

INSTALLATION AND COMMISSION OF THE NEW COBALT MACHINE.

·         Installation of new Cobalt Machine (Theratron 780E) was completed on May 2006. The Company has provided one Medical Physicist throughout the process as per tender agreement.

·         Quality assurance test of the new Cobalt Machine was carried out on 30th July, 2006 and the report was sent to AERB regarding permission for Commissioning approval.

·         Permission for Commissioning approval of the Theratron 780E was granted by AERB on 7th August, 2006 .

·         Treatment of patient started  on 14th August, 2006 .

·         The 3D Treatment Planning System was installed and commission successfully on 9th March, 2006 .

·         Delivery of Accessories, Monitoring equipments,.Mould.room.Paraphern--alia’s were delivered as per order specification and in time. 

STATUS OF EQUIPMENT

        The Cobalt Machine and Treatment Planning   System as of today are in good a working condition.  

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE W.H.O. PROJECT ON PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CERVICAL CANCER BY PAP SMEAR

Briefly, the following are the activities carried out by the Society under this project:

  • Training of ANM’s in three batch completed in Sept 2006.

  • Training of MO’s of DMHO’s East Khasi Hills in two batches completed in October 2006. Both the training was carried out under the supervision of the Medical Superintendent, Ganesh Das Hospital Shillong.

  • Raining on Paliative Care

  • Setting up of two Pap smear Centers i.e at Ganesh Das and Civil Hospital Shillong.

  • Translation of Education materials and mass Printing of the same completed from September 2006 and distributed to various hospitals.

  • Twenty five camps on prevention and Control of Cervical Cancer by Pap smear completed.

DEVELOPMENT OF CANCER ATLAS IN NORTH- EAST INDIA  

AIM OF THE PROJECT:

1.     In Hospital Base Cancer Registry: - Data was collected from all the city Hospitals, Laboratories, to ascertain the number of Cancer Cases.  All the collected data are sent to ICMR, Bangalore . This will give indications on:-  

·         Incidence of Cancer,  

·         Type of Cancer,  

·         Prevalence in male and female.  

·         Cancer.cases.will.be.registe-red only with Histopathology confirmation.
